Jesus didn’t call them the ‘sons of thunder’ for nothing! James and John, like most of us, followed Jesus with at least a smidgen of self-serving motives. Jesus didn’t spurn their desire for significance but exposed them to the only path for getting there.

The combined gospels record seven sayings of Jesus from the cross but Peter remembers only one. Without the resurrection we would all be ‘forsaken’ of God’s love.

Implicit in the question is a call to faith in the One who always keeps His promises. Where we find such a faith is often surprising.

In our busy world with our hectic lives it is so easy and common for the important things to be put on hold for the sake of the urgent things.  This cautionary tale reminds us that there are somethings that we simply can’t afford to put off til tomorrow.

When we are reborn in Christ, the love we receive, the grace we are given and the faith that grows in us are all meant to be passed on to others.

Jesus heals a lame man by the Pool of Bethesda and in doing so teaches us the power of a willing and obedient heart.
