Advent 2015-5 – Twas the Night Before Christmas

I don’t know if you’ll have time to read this on Christmas Eve, but for those of you who do I’ll do my best to keep it brief.

Here we are, the night before the big day. Last minute gifts are being wrapped, Christmas specials are being watched on TV and kids are trying to think of new excuses to stay up later while parents threaten “No gifts tomorrow” if they didn’t soon get to bed. Perhaps family has gathered or some might still be on their way. The turkey is defrosting and chocolates and snacks are already well depleted.

Tomorrow is the big day. All the hustle and bustle of the past weeks have lead to this. All the plans and preparations were for this moment. All the carols and decorations pointed to this eve and the morning that will follow. On the one hand you are anxious the sun to rise again. The smiles, the laughter, the gifts, the food, the celebration. On the other hand, you pause, just a moment to savor it. Just a minute to enjoy everything being ‘ready’. A final opportunity to be thankful.

That’s what tonight’s really all about. To give us just a hint of what it must have been like to live in the days before the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. What it must have been like to anticipate and hope for the Messiah’s arrival. What it must have been like to be waiting for the day to arrive. The star was ready to shine. The angels were ready to sing. The baby was ready to be born. Tomorrow the world would be changed forever.
